Remnants of the ex-SP / Ojai spur. Beyond the gate is the old USA Petroleum refinery located along the [Rails-to-Trails] Ventura River Trail parallel with Crooked Palm Rd and the Ventura River. *This line originated as the Ventura & Ojai Valley Railroad in the 1890's, and was purchased by the Southern Pacific Railroad a few years later. Named the Ojai spur it came off of the main line at what is now the Olive St crossing. Up until 1969 this spur traveled to Ojai, afterward the line only went as far as the USA Petroleum refinery off of Crooked Palm Rd. SP gave up using this line sometime after the closure of the refinery in 1984. Most of this old spur is now the [Rails-to-Trails] Ventura River Trail. |
